![]() Victor SD, the inner sphere's golden boy. Wolf Clan - more successful than any other clan both before and after. Natasha K, one of the best warriors in history becomes Star Colonel during her trial at very old age. Phelan Kell gets to eat so much shit that becomes khan from Bondsman. Stackpole's in the lead for eating shit? Jaime Wolfe's co & the Kell Hounds hold off half the DCMS during 4SW? Kai Allard is super amazing and his big burden is that he's super amazing. ![]() An entire Liao company which outguns their opponents would just surrender all their machines? No chance. The former is improbable, the second case, just stupid - particularly given the fiction of the world where mechs are so valued and being disposessed is shameful. If I have a choice between watching a mech taken out by a small laser, versus an entire mech company surrendering because one guy stepped on a mine then I'll take the small laser thank you very much. The early Gray Death books are good too, although they suffer from the disjuncture between early straight up feudal Battletech where a single mech is personally owned and a real treasure and later battletech where you have widespread industrialised states with the only tech bottleneck being interstellar transport and comms. They're all two dimensional.Īs far as writing goes Charette's books are much better. Kai is butthurt about being perfect because the plot needs him to be. Phelan Kell is the Perfect Ultimate Warrior, so be it. Maximilian Liao needs to be a blithering paranoid idiot who's somehow not paranoid about letting an admitted turncoat into his inner circle so he's written that way. Hanse is the one exception- everyone else is clearly written to serve the needs of the plot. The overarching plot is interesting but the characters are terrible. But Stackpole as a writer is mediocre at best. I read them as a teenager and they were fun. Ok I'll admit I like the warrior trilogy and the clans trilogy as a nostalgic pleasure.
